5 Tips to Make Your HVAC System Last

While an average HVAC system lasts for around 12-15 years, many factors could affect its lifespan. Its lifespan depends on the quality of the product, the quality of the air conditioning installation, and the periodic maintenance. Although you will have to replace the system one day, with a little precaution and some professional TLC, you can extend the life of your HVAC system.

1. Replace the Air Filter

Regularly replacing air filters saves money and improves air quality. Dust and other air pollutants are one of the main reasons for HVAC repairs, and dirty air affects your lungs as well. Check and replace furnace filters regularly and don’t just rely on the technician to do this during his bi-annual checkup.

When replacing the air filter, remember to check the air ducts as well to make sure they’re not blocked with debris. You can use a fiberglass filter that should be replaced every 30 days or a pleated filter that usually lasts about three months. A dirty filter puts pressure on the HVAC system because the filter makes the system must work harder to push air through. Periodically replacing air filters keeps the air fresh and reduces energy bills.

2. Switch Off the HVAC System When Not Needed

HVAC systems usually run 24/7 all year long. This puts pressure on the system, causing it to wear out sooner than expected. You can avoid this by giving your HVAC system a break. Use the fan whenever you can to save money on energy bills and relieve some of the need for a continually running HVAC system. Some homeowners install reflective shades to block the unwanted sun, which can help keep the home cool as well. In the winter, wearing warmer clothes can allow you to set the thermostat a little lower.

3. Schedule Regular Maintenance:

At Macioce Heating and Cooling, we offer AC maintenance and HVAC tune-ups twice a year–once in spring and once during the fall. A typical tune-up includes an inspection, cleanup, lubrication, and adjustments if any.

4. Don’t Ignore Minor Repairs:

If there’s an issue with your HVAC system, however small, make sure you get it fixed. Minor issues can often become more significant problems if not addresses quickly. If the thermostat batteries need replacement or there seems to be a problem with the condenser, call us for an inspection. Operating a malfunctioning HVAC system over time only negatively affects its performance and longevity.
